Rutgers was first chartered in 1766 as Queen's College, the eighth institution of higher learning to be founded in the colonies. The school opened its doors in New Brunswick in 1771 and during its early years, the college developed as a classic liberal arts institution. Physician, of Plainfield, N.J.; was the son of the Rev. Joseph F. Berg (1812-1871), a minister of the Dutch Reformed Church; entered Rutgers College, New Brunswick, New Jersey, in 1859 with the class of 1863, but did not graduate; attended Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia; served as assistant surgeon, 28th Regiment, New Jersey Volunteers, September 1862-July 1863.
